KIMONO SERIES
In the early 1980’s I became interested in Japanese design, particularly in kimonos. I selected a woodblock print by Utamaro, “The Shell Game Kimono,” and created a graph (1 square = 1 stitch) to follow. A friend had given me a piece of 32 count silk gauze (32 stitches per inch) which I decided to try, rather than linen or canvas. Each kimono is 4½ inches wide and 5 inches tall. One square inch of the silk equals 1,024 stitches. My daughter, Jennifer, refers to my work as “Neuroticpoint,” which I agree is very apt. Every one of my kimonos, and most other needlework, is created on 32 count silk gauze. All are my own original designs.
